Techmer PM Files Patent for Hydrophobic Additive

Techmer PM has filed a patent application for masterbatches that lead to hydrophobic properties in polymers. Contact angles (ASTM D2578) of 100–120○F have been achieved using the novel approach of halogen-free chemistry. Masterbatches are available for film and fabric products including spunbond and melt-blown fabric processes. Hydrohead values (IST 80.6) between 10 and 20 and alcohol repellency values (INDA 80.8) between 10 and 60 can be achieved using this technology. The active ingredients in this masterbatch are based on benign halogen-free chemistry that allows for the use of films and fabrics in critical applications including skin contact applications such as diapers. This technology is even a step above the PFOA-free technologies considered today, as it is completely halogen free.
