Medical-Grade Plastics – The Future of Healthcare

Techmer PM is the world’s foremost materials design firm, creating custom polymers that make up essential products.

In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, innovation is not just a competitive advantage, it is a necessity. At Techmer PM, we are proud to be at the forefront of material design, helping medical device manufacturers and healthcare brands mitigate risk while creating safer, more effective, and sustainable products.

What Are Medical-Grade Plastics?

Medical-grade plastics are specially created polymers that meet stringent safety, biocompatibility, and performance standards required for healthcare applications. These materials must withstand sterilization processes, resist chemical degradation, and maintain mechanical integrity in critical environments. Typical applications include surgical instruments, diagnostic instruments, drug delivery components, and pharmaceutical packaging.

At Techmer PM, we understand that not all plastics are created equal. Our medical solutions are built on certified, high-performance materials that comply with ISO 10993 and/or USP Class VI standards, which can be produced under ISO 13485 guidelines. These certifications ensure that our materials are safe for patient contact and suitable for use in regulated medical environments.

Types of Medical-Grade Plastics

Polypropylene (PP)

Lightweight and chemically resistant, PP is widely used in syringes, pill containers, and medical vials. It can withstand autoclaving and is cost-effective for single-use applications.

Polycarbonate (PC)

Known for its strength and transparency, PC is ideal for blood oxygenators, IV connectors, and surgical instruments. It offers excellent impact resistance and dimensional stability.

Polyethylene (PE)

Both high-density (HDPE) and low-density (LDPE) variants are used in tubing, containers, and prosthetics. PE is flexible, durable, and resistant to moisture and chemicals.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)

A high-performance thermoplastic used in orthopedic implants and dental devices. PEEK offers exceptional strength, chemical resistance, and biocompatibility.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)

TPU is used in catheters and wound dressings due to its elasticity, abrasion resistance, and compatibility with bodily fluids.

Acrylic (PMMA)

Often used in intraocular lenses and diagnostic devices, PMMA is optically clear and biocompatible.

Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU)

PPSU is another high-performance grade that offers excellent heat resistance, strength, and dimensional stability. Often used in applications requiring transparency and products that are exposed to repeat sterilization cycles.

Precision Materials for Critical Applications

Techmer PM’s medical solutions are engineered to meet the highest safety, performance, and regulatory compliance standards.

We offer a robust portfolio of additive enhancement technologies, including:

  • Non-PFAS and non-silicone surface energy modifications for improved fluid flow
  • Non-PFAS Low Retention formulations for labware
  • Improved sterilization stability
  • Increased mechanical properties for enhanced impact strength or metal replacement

Collaboration from Concept to Commercialization

Our approach is deeply collaborative. We partner with OEMs and processors from proof of concept through prototyping, pilot production, and full-scale manufacturing. Whether you’re developing a new catheter, a diagnostic housing, or a next-gen auto-injector, our technical field engineers are ready to support your journey.

We also understand the importance of speed and flexibility. With six manufacturing sites across the U.S. and one in Mexico, we offer fast turnaround times and low minimum order quantities—just 50 lbs.

Innovation in Action: TechSurf™ and Beyond

One of our standout technologies is the TechSurf™ Low Retention surface energy modification solutions, designed to improve fluid flow in medical devices. This innovation has garnered attention from industry publications, including Compounding World, where our team contributed insights into PFAS compliance, polymer compatibility, and design criteria for medical applications.

A Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

At Techmer PM, quality is non-negotiable. Our Batavia facility is ISO 13485 certified, and we maintain strict lot-to-lot consistency across all our medical formulations. We also support our partners’ sustainability goals by offering no-change solutions that reduce waste and extend product life cycles.
